Northern Territory - Red centre
Central Australia is a unique World Heritage-listed region and classic Australian Outback. This vast and stunning ancient landscape of red earth deserts and semi-arid plains offers a mixture of light and colour seen nowhere else on earth.
Uluru, or Ayers Rock is the most recognizable natural symbol of Australia and a true icon of Gondwana. The massive sandstone rises 348 meters above the desert plain and measures about 9.4km around its base and is regarded by Aboriginals as sacred. The sunrise or sunset overlooking the Rock is unforgettable!
Kata Tjuta or The Olgas is 48km west of Uluru - these strangely swollen 36 red rock domes reach 546m and date back 500 million years. The first explorer Giles called them “rounded minarets, giant cupolas and monstrous domes” and many say the place is more beautiful and intriguing than Uluru.
Kings Canyon, 302km south-west of Alice Springs, is an extraordinary sandstone chasm, where its sheer walls drop more than 270m to the canyon floor. Here. the Lost City rock formation and the lush Gardens of Eden are to be found.
