Cairns - Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

Tropical North Queensland is the only place on earth with two World Heritage-listed areas sitting side by side, where the Great Barrier Reef kisses the shores of the world's oldest tropical rainforest. Warm weather, secluded beaches, amazing wildlife, picturesque landscapes and diverse flora and fauna attract tourist to this part of Australia. Cairnsconsidered to be the capital of the Tropical North, is a cosmopolitan city with a population of approx. 140,000. It is located on the shores of Trinity Inlet, a natural harbour with magnificent rugged tropical rainforest mountains as its backdrop. The city is a staging place for tours to the Great Barrier Reef, its islands and the Atherton Tablelands and Cape Tubulation. During September to November Cairns hosts 'Big Game' fishing events, when numerous fish over 450kg are caught daily!

 

Port Douglas is 73 km NW of Cairns and can be reached by one of the most scenic coastal drives in Australia. Once a small village, it has become an international tourist destination. Port Douglas is surrounded by lush vegetation and pristine rainforest. Its tropical mountain setting, along with its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, makes the town an ideal holiday destination.

 

The Great Barrier Reef is Australia's most prized and visited natural destination and the largest formation of coral reefs in the world. Visible from space, it is a World Heritage site. This “Eighth wonder of the world” with 2900 individual reefs stretches some 2000 km along the coastline of northern Queensland. The reef is host to the most diverse collection of marine life in the world, supporting 350 species of corals and over 1500 species of tropical fish. The water is crystal clear, with visibility ranging up to 60 metres.
