Moreton Island is a large island located in Moreton Bay and its unspoilt wilderness is protected by its Australian National park status. The island is 38 km long and has a maximum width of about 9 km. Apart from a few rocky headlands, Moreton Island is all sand including 280 m high Mt Tempest, the highest coastal sand dune in the world. There are several freshwater lakes including beautiful Blue Lagoon, perched among dunes on the north-east side of the island, and nearby Honeyeater Lake that is a great place for bird-watching. The ocean side of Moreton Island is part of the migratory route of humpback whales on their annual journey along Australia's East coast. Much of the island is covered by wallum heath, and there are also eucalypt forests and swamps.
